Meditation Marathon 2011

Dear Friends of the Awakened Life Project,

We invite you to join us and support us for our Meditation Marathon starting on Saturday December 10 at 10am and finishing on Sunday December 11th at 10am. Our Meditation Marathon last year was a great success (We reached our goal of 20,000€!). This money helped us to renovate another of the ruins of Quinta da Mizarela. Lots of work has been done that you can read about here. Its exciting to see how much we have done but there is still more to go and that is why we are having our 2nd Meditation Marathon.

Now we want to raise funds for the next stage of development, which includes finishing the communal kitchen, setting up the woodburning hot water and heating systems in the almost completed big house, constructing another compost toilet, adding more beds to the permaculture gardens and planting more fruit trees.

Our efforts to develop this Project are all to create the infrastructure we need to meet the increasing interest that is coming our way from people from all over the world who want to spend time here. Every week we have to turn people away because we don´t have the facilities to accommodate them. With the help of donations from last year we have made a lot of progress and with the help of donations from this year we will be able to do even more. If you havent read our vision page yet, take a look. It will give you a good idea of what your money will support. This year is a bit different then last as we are teaming up with our friends at EnlightenNext and we are doing our Meditation marathon as part of their worldwide fund-raising initiative. Why are we doing this? Because Andrew Cohen´s liberation teachings of Evolutionary Enlightenment have been a constant source of inspiration for all of us and have provided us with an all-embracing spiritual context in which Awakened Life is flourishing. They are an organization doing amazing things and they too need to raise money so we will be sharing our donations with them. AND doing our marathons at the same time is a rare opportunity to join many other people around the globe in a period of intensive meditation practice.

We know we are living in difficult economic times so we do not ask you for money lightly. Because we are living in difficult times we see an opportunity for something new to emerge and that is why we are pouring all of our money and energy into creating this project. Everyone can help to create a new future in his or her own way. If you feel inspired by what you have read and you want to help us to continue to create this project then click the button below. Maratona de Meditação 2011

Queridos amigos do Projecto Vida Desperta,

Convidamos-vos a juntarem-se a nós e apoiarem-nos na nossa Maratona de Meditação que começa no Sábado dia 10 de Dezembro às 10h e acaba Domingo dia 11 às 10h. O ano passado a nossa Maratona de Meditação foi um grande sucesso (conseguimos atingir o nosso objectivo de 20 000€!). Este dinheiro ajudou-nos a renovar outra das ruínas da Quinta da Mizarela. Muito trabalho foi feito e podem ler sobre isso aqui . É entusiasmante ver o quanto já fizemos, mas ainda há mais a fazer e por isso estamos a organizar a 2ª Maratona de Meditação.

Agora queremos angariar fundos para a próxima fase de desenvolvimento, que inclui acabar a cozinha comunitária, instalar um sistema de água quente e aquecimento a lenha na quase completa “Casa Grande”, construir outra casa-de-banho seca, acrescentar mais canteiros ao jardim de permacultura e plantar mais árvores de frutos.

Os nossos esforços para desenvolver este Projecto são todos dirigidos a criar a infra-estrutura que precisamos para ir de encontro ao interesse crescente de pessoas de todo o mundo que querem vir cá passar algum tempo. Todas as semanas temos que recusar a vinda de pessoas porque não temos instalações para as acomodar. Com a ajuda de donativos do ano passado, conseguimos fazer muitos progressos e com os donativos deste ano poderemos fazer ainda mais. Se não ainda leram a nossa visão, dêem uma olhada. Lime Plastering Workshop

Aerated Lime
The history of this material dates from the dawn of the history of man. It was still in pre-historical times that man began producing lime – there where found traces of its use with more than 10 000 years. This material is part of the group of the first chemical transformations that we were able to dominate. Since then it’s present in many cultures around the world and in Portugal it is widespread throughout most of the country. It was used for millennia as a disinfectant, as a bonding agent and as soil treatment for agriculture. Today, if we exclude oil and its derivatives, this is the most produced chemical in the world – 300 million tons annually.
In less developed economies a large proportion of this material is still use for construction, especially as mortar for masonry and as plastering or coating. In highly industrialized economies, like ours, the proportion of lime applied to construction is extremely low. Cement now occupies that space.
This new material has several problems, at an ecological level – requires large amounts of energy to be produced and is not recyclable – at an economic and social level – needs a major centralization of resources and capital to be produced – and at a technical level – short-life (it’s chemical cure their never stops so it deteriorates with the passage of time), releases salts over time which are damaging to buildings, it has a strong capillary action and because of its rigidity it tends to crack.
It was the usage of cement renderings, for instance, that created to the need for the introduction of solutions such as latex and plastic paints that, in turn, also have serious consequences for the environment and for the health and comfort of buildings.

But lime can and should be rescued. Using traditional recipes and developing new research it is now possible to obtain solutions that easily surpass the performance of cement with such a great environmental comfort and aesthetic quality that they render the use of any other type of finishing totally useless.

As a constructive solution this material stands out in several ways:

Lime is an appropriate material – Even if it results from the burning of limestone (CaCO3) at temperatures from 825 to 900 °C the production of lime can be made on a local scale with simple technology. Its application, although involving some specific knowledge, is easy to learn.

Lime is a very versatile material – The lime can be used for many purposes. In construction it can be used as mortar, ordinary plastering, waterproofed plastering, paints, glues, stabilizer for mortar and earth bricks, among many other applications. Lime allows you to add other materials incorporating new physical and chemical features (eg. By adding pozzolans you can get sturdy concrete as that used by Romans in the construction of the Pantheon, or adding a byproduct of olive-oil production you can get a totally hydrophobic mix that maintains a high permeability to water vapor. This material is also compatible with a large number of constructive solutions including building with raw earth.

Lime is an environmentally friendly material – Even with the combustion, lime’s embedded energy is relatively low. The same amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) released during the burning process (excluding that from the fuel) is reabsorbed in the curing process. Plus, lime is a fully recyclable material and capable of incorporating, for the formation of composite materials, byproducts of other industrial activities – that are sometimes difficult to eliminate. Lime can also be produced from renewable raw materials (eg from the shells of some mollusks).

Lime is not toxic – When applied as a plastering, because it is not a vapor barrier, lime provides a quality environment balancing the moisture in the air and preventing respiratory diseases. It is an entirely natural material totally compatible with human health.

Lime is a hard and durable material – In the curing process, the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) causes the lime to slowly turn to it’s source material, limestone, creating a monolithic material that is both extremely durable and aesthetically very interesting. It also grants to mixes a low elasticity modulus turning them very resistant to cracking.

These characteristics grant lime a great strategic interest in the search for solutions that promote the ability of individuals and communities to manage their own built environment, while maintaining an harmonious existence in the ecosystem we inhabit.
Control over this material opens up a wide range of possibilities that can be applied in the creation of jobs and economic relations at the local level, working in a sustainable, resilient and creative way.

The Teacher
Fernando Cartaxo is Civil Engineer graduated from Instituto Superior Técnico in 1976. In addition to extensive experience in project and building site management he has worked on detailed studies on lime since 2001. He’s since been involved in research on the composition and manufacture of lime paste, pozzolamic. He co-authored the communication “Characterisation of hydrofuged lime Mortars for use on walls, ancient buildings” presented in 2006 at the 7th International Masonry Conference.
In 1996 he founded FRADICAL, Fábrica de Transformação de Cal, Lda. that is dedicated to the production and marketing of various lime products.
He also co-authored the European patented solution ECO-ETICS Suberlyme

The workshop
This workshop’s goal is the transmission of knowledge about lime and all its possibilities. Special attention will be given to its striking possibilities as a plastering solution. This includes fully waterproofed plastering solutions. Theoretical and practical components will be balenced trough out the workshop. Together, these two learning moments will allow that, at the end of this workshops, the students have the ability to understand and apply this material.
The workshop will have three major stages:
1 – Transmission of theoretical knowledge on lime a pozzolans.
2 – Testing various plastering solutions (samples)
3 – Applying the acquired knowledge by plastering an adobe building built in a previous workshop. To learn more about this building click here.
This workshop targets all those (with or without training in construction) who have the curiosity to better understand this material.
It will be held in Portuguese with simultaneous translation into English.

A practical weekend of growing and eating food from an integral permaculture perspective

Join Laura Williams and Annelieke van der Sluijs on our beautiful quinta nestled in the Serra do Açor Mountains. The weekend will be hands on, empowering you with the skills to get started and/or develop your existing garden with permaculture principles. Using permaculture you will be able to work with nature and produce the most abundant yields for the least effort.

We will examine the ecological principles which will enable you to understand and work with the energy flows in nature to your advantage. Using our gardens as a classroom we will then look at how permaculture principles are distilled from nature and apply them to specific areas of gardening.

A very important part of how we live here at the Awakened Life Project is with an emphasis on raw and wild foods; eating them, growing them, gathering them and preparing them and we would like to share this with you. So we will look at how you can incorporate more wild foods and perennials in your gardens and kitchens. We will forage on the quinta and familiarise you with the wild foods you can gather at home.

On Sunday you will apply the principles we have looked at to design and build a raised bed from scratch so you can really get started at home.

On this weekend you will:

Gain confidence to apply permaculture principles in your own garden
Find out about natural ecological principles, energy flows and how to work with them
Look at integrating wild species in your garden and menu
Get your hands dirty with a practical vegetable bed building
Have opportunities for questions and discussions on topics of interest to you and your own garden
Enjoy fresh and delicious, raw and vegetarian food and have the chance to learn some raw food techniques

The weekend will start on your arrival on Friday evening between 6 and 7pm with a shared dinner and will finish on Sunday at 4 for with tea and a raw treat!

We will enjoy 3 freshly prepared and filling vegetarian and raw meals a day.

Accommodation will be in tents and our yurt. IT MAY BE COLD AT NIGHT & RAINY SO BE PREPARED!

You will need to bring bedding, a torch, walking boots/shoes, waterproof coat, sunhat, notepad and pen/pencil. Something to sit on outside like an old cushion or mat would be really useful too.

Permaculture Gardening

I still have a huge smile on my face from the joy of the Permaculture Gardening course Annelieke and I facilitated this weekend. 14 wonderfully enthusiastic, committed and curious participants came and dived right into quinta life, permaculture gardening and the waterfalls!

People said they felt welcomed by the people of the Project and embraced by the beauty of the valley and everyone settled into to a relaxed and easy rhythm from the very start. The kitchen crew provided sumptuous, fresh raw and vegetarian food which is a perfect complement to the clean air, fresh water and outdoor living.

The delicious food fuelled a combination of theory and practical. Nature was our teacher and the forest and garden our classroom as we explored the ecological principles that make nature so efficient and resilient and how permaculture is distilled from that combining natural wisdom with human innovation in order that we can evolve and create a new self-reliant culture in which we can all thrive. All of this set in the context of the vision of the Awakened Life Project; living as our true selves, beyond ego and always going somewhere new – together.

In-between the theory came the practical and we mulched, weeded, sowed seeds, foraged for wild food. And for the grand finale created a wonderful raised bed using all local materials, most of them ‘waste’ like the left-over pressings from our grape harvest. All went in and all will be used by nature to create an abundant soil bursting with life. Everyone got their hands dirty and the finished bed was christened ‘Lola’s Paradise’ as Lola the cat seemed delighted with her new playground!!

After the course people told us that the ratio of theory to practical was just right, the theory putting into context and explaining the practical. Many people are just about to start their own gardens or have already started and were looking for inspiration. People said they had been given a fresh perspective that makes sense and the confidence to go and get started right away in their own plots! Participants enjoyed the experience so much they requested more courses, a Part 2 or more specifics, so that may well happen next year. Everyone is keen to stay in touch and possibly help with each other’s projects on the future.

As so many people wanted to come to this course we scheduled another one for the 21^st-23^rd of October. Evolutionary Enlightenment

During August, Pete, Cynthia, Adam, Mim, Laura and our Portuguese friends Ricardo & Teresa, went on a 10 day retreat with Spiritual Teacher Andrew Cohen in Tuscany, Italy. Andrew´s profound contemporary teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment is the guiding light and inspiration for the Awakened Life Project and the retreat was an extraordinary journey into our individual and collective evolutionary potential.

If you are interested in seeing a permaculture project, interested in what we are doing here or would just like to spend a beautiful day in nature then please take the opportunity to join us on the following open days.

The day will include a guided tour of the permaculture project, solar systems, ram pump, how the irrigation system has been set up, a delicious vegetarian meal and plenty of time for discussion and to enjoy the natural beauty and waterfalls of Fraga da Pena. We have set the dates for these open days once a month so people can come as often as they want and see the garden in different stages. The focus of the tour and the discussion is flexible depending on the interests of the participants.

The day starts at 11:00 and finishes at 17:00. The price is 15€.

Oportunidade para aprender a construir de raiz uma pequena casa com materiais locais: troncos de eucalipto e terra, usando as técnicas de “cordwood” e do “super-adobe”.

Vamos criar condições e oportunidades personalizadas para um pequeno grupo de voluntários trabalharem e aprenderem a construir de acordo com a sua capacidade física, durante o período mínimo de 5 dias.

Entre em contacto e informe sobre a sua experiência profissional, o grau de envolvimento e tipo de trabalho físico que pode executar.

Caso a caso, avaliaremos se podemos criar as condições para a sua participação.

Temas e fases do plano e execução:

- geo e bio-localização, acessos, fluxos de energia e materiais

- guardar e libertar energia – desenho de sistemas passivos de aquecimento e arrefecimento

- alicerces

- estruturas de madeira

- rede de água

- água quente solar, do composto e de biomassa

- massa térmica e isolamento – paredes com toros de madeira – “cordwood”, e sacos de terra – “super-adobe”

- telhado

- janelas e portas

- sistema de purificação de águas cinzentas

- estufa anexa

- casa de banho

- sanitário seco

- anexos que servem o abrigo (espaço da lenha, carro …)

- compostagem com minhocas

- paredes e telhados vivos

- armazenamento da água da chuva

- logística da execução, organizar o local da construção

- compra e manutenção de ferramentas

- compra e transporte de materiais de construção
